For the Record is a weekly column that rounds up details about new and pending recordings of interest to the new-music community – contemporary classical music and jazz, electronic and electroacoustic music, and idioms for which no clever genre name has been coined – on CD, vinyl LP, cassette, digital-only formats… you name it.

This list of release dates is culled from press releases, Bandcamp, and other internet stores and sources, social media posts,  and online resources such as Discogs. Dates cited typically correspond to initial U.S. release, and are subject to change.

Today is not a bona fide Bandcamp Friday; the next one is on May 1. But some artists are sharing the wealth anyway. For instance, gabby fluke-mogul is donating all profits from their new self-released solo set, GUT, to Stand With South Brooklyn, which organizes financial and other support for South Brooklyn community members targeted by ICE.

As Piotr Orlov pointed out yesterday, the fierce improvising violinist, activist, and Creative Music Studio executive director is celebrating a birthday this week – cheers!! – with a very keen-looking gig coming up next Wednesday in Brooklyn.

At this moment, I can’t overstate how strange and wonderful it is to have the voice of Steve Dalachinsky in my ears again thanks to Tonguesnatcher, newly arrived this morning from Elliott Sharp on his zOaR label. The recording preserves a show Steve played with guitarist Alex Lozupone’s jazz-rock band Eighty-Pound Pug and flute virtuoso Robert Dick one night in March 2019. Steve died, suddenly and unexpectedly, just six months later. (Here’s a gift link for Neil Genzlinger’s very fine New York Times obituary, in which I’m cited.)

“I have trouble recalling any significant, edifying or exhilarating free-jazz or total-improvisation concert I’ve attended at which Mr. Dalachinsky has not been in the audience, rough-edged, congenial and ready with an opinion,” I wrote on the single occasion when I was assigned to review one of his performances for The New York Times. He shared the bill with multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee and keyboardist-composer Charlemagne Palestine. You really had to be there, but I did my best to evoke what I heard:

Mr. Dalachinsky, beholden to the Beats but seasoned by meaner times, recited with a jazz-horn flow. He rushed one phrase and elongated the next; occasionally he stuttered on a single syllable, and then released the pent-up tension in a gush. Mr. McPhee, on tenor saxophone, mustered a pastor’s incantatory tone to recall the September 1963 bombing of a black church in Birmingham, Ala. In an eruptive soliloquy partly based on Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday” and partly on the hymn “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” he repeated the names of the four schoolgirl victims like a mantra.

Reviewing Steve was challenging not because his artistry was ambiguous – it was not – but because I held him in such fond esteem. Indeed, it was when I began to understand I’d become a friend to Steve and his wife, Yuko Otomo, that I first started to regard myself as an authentic New Yorker.
