The actual pillows that overheard this conversation (in a rented apartment in Antigua, Guatemala)

So, recently on Substack I have gone in some different directions: a bit of travelogue, a bit of politics, as well as my usual announcement of the Next Big Thing I’m creating for you.

This time I’m sharing a guest post from my wife that illustrates the difference between normal whale readers/book dragons (she loves to read as much as I do) and “hard SF” fans like myself. (It’s not entirely our fault. I blame the authors in the genre for taking over our subconscious imaginations so thoroughly that memories from two years ago can become so vivid so suddenly…)

It also illustrates the way my lovely wife plays on my weaknesses when I’m in that weird liminal space of being mostly asleep but still somewhat verbal (for that, see the other episodes of Pillow Talk… if y’all love this one, I can share others too, with commentary in my own defense of course. ;-)

Last night’s Pillow Talk:

Nic and I in bed, not talking, not quite asleep.

Me, knowing that I have NO idea what the answer will be: What are you thinking about?

Nic: A story.

Me: Story about what?

Nic: A whole fleet of Von Neumann probes, spread out all through the universe… and they are all named Bob.

Me, *very* carefully not asking what a Von Neumann probe is.

15 mins later, Nic still telling me the story, getting more enthusiastic as he talks.

Turns out it is a whole series. He has read the first two books.

(Note: when I showed him this post, he wanted to clarify that the Bobs are spread out throughout the galaxy, not the universe. Because that’s clearly the most important detail.)
