Good morning. Today’s newsletter includes stories about the passing of Dick Cheney, Mark Zuckerberg’s secret school, China’s shipbuilding lead and more.

Thank you for reading.

Dick Cheney passed away this week. It shouldn’t be surprising, that his passing prompted an examination of his legacy in government, as an elected official, and then in retirement.

Here are two of the more interesting opinion pieces that I have read. The first: “What I Saw of the Real Dick Cheney,” was written by a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, Matt Latimer:

By the time his critics were done, Cheney had become so synonymous with the concept of evil that even Cheney himself gamely accepted it — once walking on stage to the “Imperial March” from Star Wars. Because why not? It can be liberating to be the bad guy everyone thinks you are.

The second piece, "How Dick Cheney’s Lack of Restraint Paved the Way for Donald Trump,” was written by David Greenberg, who is clearly a critic and not a fan. In it, he argues that Dick Cheney paved the way for the expansion of presidential power. Power that is now being used by President Trump to negative effect.

Personally, I have always been a fan of Cheney. I appreciated his cold-eyed realism which he dropped as casually as hello in speeches and television appearances over his long career.

This Cheney quote is a personal favorite of mine:

The good Lord didn’t see fit to put oil and gas only where there are democratically elected regimes friendly to the United States. Occasionally we have to operate in places where, all things considered, one would not normally choose to go. But, we go where the business is.

He will be missed.

Politico: Underreported this week in all the MSM coverage of Democrat gains, was a two-seat pickup by Democrats in Mississippi in the State Senate.

National Review: Representative Elise Stefanik Announces Run for N.Y. Governor. This is a serious challenge to Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul. Stefanik in her announcement video is smart to talk about affordability as it is an issue that is very much on voters’ minds. According to polling the newest Democrat Governors in New Jersey and Virginia owe their wins to this issue, as does the socialist darling Zohran Mamdani.

Quote of the Day

Zohran Mamdani announced that he had chosen an all-woman transition team. Although when a socialist Democrat uses the words “woman” and “transition” together, you’re never sure exactly what he’s talking about. We’re just baffled how people who can’t even define what a “woman” is know that that’s what they’re hiring. - The Huckabee Post
