A rooftop fire scare at the Brenton Hotel prompted a massive emergency response Friday night, forcing guests to evacuate and temporarily shutting down part of America’s Cup Avenue.
Newport Fire received a call at 9:17 p.m. reporting a malfunctioning chiminea-style fire pit on the roof of the luxury waterfront hotel at 31 America’s Cup Ave. Firefighters from all three Newport stations were dispatched a minute later for a possible rooftop fire.
Crews arrived by 9:20 p.m., with Brenton Command established as firefighters rushed to the roof. Engine 1, Rescue 1, and Engine 5 crews tore through multiple layers of roofing around the fire pit to determine whether flames had spread into the building.
A 2½-inch hose line was stretched onto the roof while firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to search for hidden hot spots. Engine 2 crews simultaneously checked the hotel’s fifth floor for any fire extension below.
