The Colin Kennedy era at Newport City Hall is effectively over.
After more than two years of controversy, policy fights and an increasingly bitter relationship with the City Council, Newport’s embattled city manager was placed on paid administrative leave Saturday as negotiations continue over his claims against the city.
The council also voted not to renew Kennedy’s contract which will expire in July 2027, closing the door on his continued tenure while the two sides remain locked in a legal battle over Kennedy’s allegations of a hostile work environment.
The votes came after the council went behind closed doors at 10 a.m. for its third executive session in little more than a month devoted to Kennedy’s job performance, employment and legal claims.
