Block Island's Best Week Is Right Now

Island time runs out faster than people think. Block Island’s ferry schedule starts thinning by early September, some seasonal spots close up shop right after Labor Day, and the crowds that show up in July have usually moved on by now: which makes mid-August the best window of the whole season to go. This week, we’re heading out to the island.

Island Season Is Short. Here’s How Locals Spend It.

Block Island only really works for about ten weeks a year, and anyone who’s spent time there treats those weeks like they matter. The ferry runs less frequently once September hits, a chunk of the restaurants and rental shops close for the season right after Labor Day, and the island itself seems to know its own clock: the light gets different, the crowds thin, and by October it’s basically a different place.

Mid-August is the sweet spot. The July rush has cleared out, the water’s as warm as it gets all year, and you can still get a same-day ferry reservation without booking weeks out. Locals know this is the window, not the Fourth of July crush, not the empty-out of September, but this exact stretch.

The other thing worth knowing: most first-time visitors treat Block Island as a day trip, off the 10am ferry and back on the 4pm.

That’s enough time to see Mohegan Bluffs and grab lunch, but it’s not enough time to actually feel the island slow down, which is the whole reason people come back year after year. If you can manage one overnight, do it.

Mansion Beach

What it is: A beach on the island’s northeast side, past Corn Neck Road, reachable by a short walk from a small unmarked parking area.

Why I’m telling you about it: Most day-trippers end up at Crescent Beach because it’s closest to the ferry and easiest to find. Mansion Beach takes maybe fifteen more minutes to reach and gets a fraction of the crowd, with better sand and clearer water.

People book the ferry, then figure they’ll sort out a bike rental once they land. In mid-August, that’s a gamble: the rental shops near the ferry dock can sell out of bikes by mid-morning on a busy weekend, and without a bike, a huge chunk of the island (including Mansion Beach and the interior) becomes a lot harder to reach. Book your bike rental online before you get on the ferry. It takes two minutes and it’s the single biggest thing that determines whether your day trip actually works.
