Late August is fair season in New England, and it’s the kind of thing that’s easy to miss if nobody tells you it’s happening. These five are worth building a weekend around.
1. Fryeburg Fair (Maine): technically early October, but tickets and lodging go fast; late August is when locals start planning.
2. Deerfield Fair (New Hampshire): one of the oldest agricultural fairs in the state, with a livestock show that’s worth seeing even if you’re not a farm person.
3. Champlain Valley Fair (Vermont): the state’s largest, with a midway that runs late and a food scene that’s better than fair food has any right to be.
4. Woodstock Fair (Connecticut): small-town scale, big-time demolition derby, and a lot less crowded than the state’s bigger fairs.
5. Marshfield Fair (Massachusetts): a South Shore staple with a carnival, agricultural exhibits, and genuinely good fried dough.
