My introduction to New Constellations was when I was invited to Gemma’s house on Dartmoor to record some early thinking about what became, and in essence already was, New Constellations.

Psychologically and politically we would much rather assume that the cause of a problem is “out there”, rather than “in here”. It’s almost irresistible to blame something or someone else, to shift responsibility away from ourselves, and to look for the control knob, the product, the pill, the technical fix that will make a problem go away.

I have written before about the beginnings of New Constellations. We are now in the process of putting New Constellations into a chrysalis to enable its further evolution, which provides an inflection point to share some reflections from our first five year cycle of work.

In 2023, New Constellations collaborated with Megan Lucero, Emma Shaw and JRF’s Emerging Futures Programme to conduct a series of interviews with people across the financial system.

An experiment in transformative financial redistribution.

It feels like there is twice as much life happening in the same amount of time as there was before the pandemic, a by-product of so many things being cancelled and now booked in – with in-person meetings butting up against weddings and family parties, it is like living in a Netflix film at 10x the speed.

New Constellations was born out of the recognition that we are living through a time of great upheaval, and out of the desire to create spaces in which people can reflect on what we are living through and consider how we should respond.
