13 in a row for champion Jane

Jane Brackenbury won the ladies’ championship at West Berkshire for the 13th year in succession.

The nine-handicapper scored 81 on Saturday and 87 on Sunday for 168, while there was a tie on 190 for second place with Pat Treacy edging out Tina Mulford on countback.

There were five titles up for grabs at West Berks following the postponement of the championship from early June.

The start was on Tuesday with the ladies’ senior championship, which was won by Treacy with a score of 93.

She was followed by Paula Corfield who was a shot behind in second, while Tina Mulford with 95 beat Sian Soanes on countback to claim third place.

The veteran’s prize was won by Helen Cloney with gross 98, while the prize for the best net score was decided on countback with Ann Brown, net 68, beating Paula Corfield.

James Cameron won the men’s championship after an epic battle with reigning champion Jason Kendal.

Tied after 36 holes on 160, a three-hole play-off was required to decide the winner.

It was all square on the tee of the third extra hole, the long par-four 18th.

Kendal’s iron off the tee ran into trouble and Cameron scored par to take the honours.

Simon Grayson was third with 162.

The Wise Trophy for players with handicaps between 13 and 18 was won by Wayne Rolls with 174, while Sean O’Briain, with 181, won the Bennett Cup for handicaps over 18.

The Peter Grayson Trophy, awarded for the best net score in the men’s competition, went to O’Briain with 141, while the best net score for the ladies was won by Gale McAuley with 149.

Kevin Knape, John Loader and Ricky Skrzydlo all scored 35 points to head the men’s midweek stableford finishing in that order on countback

Seb Buck won a high scoring nine-hole Hopwood Salver with a fine score of 24 points in a contest in which 10 players scored 20 points or over.

Alex Evans was second with 22 while Nick Jones won a three-way tie on 21 on countback.

The seniors’ won 4-2 at home to Ogbourne Downs and the Vets beat Test Valley.
