zchielo · NEVER QUITE HERE

Lately I’ve been feeling like…myself again. Though “again” might not be the right word. Maybe it’s more like meeting a person I’ve been living with but never fully looked at.

Not the performative one, not the one that knows how to behave in a room, but the unfiltered me, the one who shows up without rehearsing. I didn’t force it. These things rarely arrive with warning. One day you simply notice that you’re no longer adjusting your edges to fit into the day. You’re breathing differently. You are, in some small way, unedited.

It began a few months ago, when someone entered my life with the kind of presence that doesn’t demand anything, not explanations, not ornaments, not a version of me smoothed out for easy consumption. I found myself relaxing without being instructed to relax. Strange how my body knows before the mind does.

Comfort arrived quickly, too quickly for me to understand. There was no ceremony to it, just the feeling of sitting down in a chair I didn’t realize was mine. And when we stopped talking for a while, something in me went quiet, an internal dimming, the kind that’s not dramatic but still makes you blink, trying to understand what disappeared.

In the silence, I became aware of myself in a new way. A thought surfaced, small but persistent, like a knock from inside my own ribs. It wasn’t profound; it was simply mine, unfiltered. And I realized, with a kind of startled tenderness, that I had finally heard myself think. Not the thoughts meant for others, but the ones with no audience.

When we found are way back to each other’s orbit, things feel surprisingly steady, it didn’t feel like fate. Fate is too noisy, too theatrical. This was quieter. A returning that didn’t need to explain itself. A familiarity settling into place, almost shyly.

Around this person, something in me stands upright without effort. I don’t have to perform the lighter version of myself, the one that speaks in neat lines and hides anything jagged. I can exist with my full weight, the human weight, where living is both simple and impossible at the same time.

The future, which used to stretch in front of me like a question I was afraid to answer, now feels breathable. I step toward it without negotiating who I need to be. It feels almost radical to move without arguing with myself first.

I’m learning that becoming myself isn’t a transformation. It’s an uncovering. A brushing away of the dust that gathered while I was busy pretending. A return to a voice that waited patiently for its turn to speak.

Some people don’t change us. They don’t fix us. They simply stand near enough that we remember what we sound like. They create a kind of internal weather: mild & spacious, where the truth can walk around barefoot.

And so here I am, listening more closely than before. To the small interior signals. To the thoughts that arrive without performance.

I don’t know where any of this leads, but I’m finally inhabiting myself with a kind of honesty that feels almost new. Or maybe, it was always there, waiting for the noise to thin out.

For now, I am here.

And I can hear myself.

That, I think, is the beginning of everything.
