Will ADHD medication change my child’s personality?
This is one of the most common concerns I hear from parents. Many worry that medication will make their child drowsy, “dopey” or somehow less like themselves.
The aim of ADHD treatment is not to take away a child’s personality or unique spark. When medication is considered, it should be carefully prescribed, monitored and reviewed as part of an individual treatment plan.
If a child seems unusually withdrawn, overly quiet, persistently drowsy or unlike themselves, parents should discuss this with the prescribing clinician. The dose or medication may need to be reviewed.
Medication is not the only form of ADHD support, and the decision to use it should involve an informed conversation between the family, the young person and their healthcare professional.
