How Chronic Stress Changes the Way You Read Other People

There is a strange thing that can happen when you have been stressed for too long.

Other people begin to feel harder to read.

A short reply feels colder than usual. Someone being quiet makes you wonder if you did something wrong. A neutral face looks annoyed. A delayed message starts creating stories in your head before you have any real information.

Nothing obvious has changed about the other person.

But something has changed in the system doing the reading.

Your brain does not interpret people from a perfectly neutral place. It uses your current emotional state, past experiences, body signals, memory, and expectations to decide what another person might mean.

When the nervous system has been under pressure for a long time, that interpretation can become more defensive.

You stop only asking, “What are they saying?”

Your brain quietly begins asking, “Is there something here I need to protect myself from?”
