Peter Benson · Neural Horizons Substack

We explore the phenomenon of algorithmic anxiety, which occurs when artificial intelligence introduced to assist workers is instead used to monitor, rank, and eventually displace them.

This shift often constitutes a breach of the psychological contract, violating unwritten expectations of trust, professional identity, and fair treatment.

While algorithmic management can offer efficiency gains, it frequently prioritizes legible data over human judgment, leading to work intensification and the devaluation of expertise.

To mitigate these risks, we advocate for human-centred augmentation that preserves worker autonomy and requires transparent governance.

Organizations are encouraged to adopt frameworks that protect human agency and ensure that technological integration involves meaningful consultation rather than just surveillance.

Sustainable AI adoption requires a commitment to maintaining the personhood and dignity of employees within an increasingly automated cognitive supply chain.
