Today, 45 million acres of wild lands that millions of people across the US use to hunt, fish, camp, hike, bike, ski and so much more, are protected through the Roadless Rule, one of the most successful conservation measures established over 25 years ago with over 95% support from the public.
These lands are critical to the communities and cultures built around the great outdoors, they’re the lifeblood of these small towns, sporting clubs and people who truly value the rugged, wild nature of these places…but these lands are threatened, as the current administration seeks to rescind the Roadless Rule to allow big industry to build roads to extract resources, to log and destroy these forests. These roads and development will disrupt habitat and lead to a loss of wilderness—things that many of us depend on for both our lifestyles and livelihoods.
Despite being a ‘conservative’ government, this administration's approach to public lands has been anything but conservative, as they constantly work to rob the public of these lands that belong to all of us, all so that a few rich folks can get even richer. A recent comment period about the future of the roadless rule found over 99% of the public in broad support for keeping it in place, yet the administration has seemingly ignored this input, and is moving forward into the next phase of repealing it.
