The Power of Imagination in Creating Different Futures

Watching the global geopolitical dramas that continue to prop up an overtly idiotic fossil fuel industry that is the root of so many problems instead of actively transitioning to a clean energy system, all so that a few rich elite can get a little richer, is incredibly frustrating and can make any constructive action seem futile…but maybe that’s all by design.

In this late-stage capitalist nightmare we’re all in, the downward spiral that society seems to be on keeps us locked in a flight, fight or freeze response, unable to think or work constructively towards a different, better future, and thus, the status quo is maintained which upholds the power structures established by these global colonial capitalist systems.

One of the most pervasive and toxic things about capitalism is that it fundamentally reshapes the framework which we view the world, to a point where we aren’t even capable of imagining living in a different system. Things like ecologically sustainable logging, reciprocal non-extractive relationships with the natural world, or even a clean energy transition can seem like ludicrous fantasies because we simply cannot imagine how they would function in a world dominated by capital and profits.

It is literally much easier to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine the end of capitalism.

So maybe thats exactly where we need to begin, by dreaming about a different future. I’ve recently been inspired by reading some of Rob Hopkins work, where he discusses how imagination can be an incredibly powerful tool in creating change, and plan to make more videos on the issues.

We know we need to create a different system than our current one in order to sustain literal life on this planet, but we’re so burdened by existing within the constraints of this current system that we can hardly even imagine anything different. There are examples all around us, from comfortable, walkable cities with ample green space to community gardens that supply schools with fresh healthy foods, all we need to do is look at these small tangible examples for what’s possible, and keep dreaming.
