We are watching the gaming industry collapse in real time, and the people running it are calling it exponential growth.
The news has been nothing but negative since the Xbox showcase ended. Developer layoffs, Xbox studio closures, Xbox’s third price increase, PlayStation getting rid of physical disc printing, GTA 6 making the full version of their game $100.
I love covering gaming, and games are my way of decompressing and recharging. I feel like we are seeing the collapse of gaming to the whims of shareholders. Art is not valued by these corporations, and live services have put the nail in the coffin of the future of gaming.
I am not saying we won’t have games. I am saying we are at the point comic books were at in the 90s, and of course gaming in the early 80s.
We will see a lot more of these types of headlines until we have a much smaller gaming industry. A lot of devs will leave and go to something less volatile. Piracy will flourish, and the hardware will only get more expensive.
GTA VI will be huge, but it will bloat the numbers for the industry this year. More publishers will charge $80 for their games, they will sell less, they will complain that these games were bad, and they will close more studios. Fortnite and Warzone will continue to slowly bleed out players.
The negatives are so visible that it is hard to see the potential silver lining. We will see smaller studios that make more games like Expedition 33.
I want to see AA games make a comeback. 8 to 12 hour games with tight gameplay and stories made up a ton of what I played when I was younger. I would love to see more of these games. I don’t need 20 games that are 120+ hours.
