The Wanderlust Issue #20

Welcome to Issue #20 of The Wanderlust, my monthly zine where I share what I’m up to, encourage you to dance, wander and explore and discover amazing new creative talent. I delve into my photo archives, share snippets from my travel journals and drop in the odd freebie. So if you know someone who you think might like this, feel free to share it with them.

The rain over the last 4 weeks put paid to any sunny, crisp walks and the cabin fever has been very real! We’ve snatched just 2 dry days to get outside and enjoy the snowdrops at Cambo and Branklyn Gardens. I hope you’ve had at least a few days too. The sun is out as I type this and the weekend’s snow is melting. I’ve been using this extra time stuck indoors to catch up on my ever growing backlog of editing, to release some new images out into the world. I’m particularly pleased with this panorama which has been sitting on my hard drive since Autumn 2024.

I mentioned last month that we’d like to explore the UK more with a trip this year to either North Wales or the Yorkshire coast. After a little research, we’re leaning towards Yorkshire and I’ve started putting together a wander list.

• The historic town of Saltburn-By-The-Sea looks like a great place to start the trip. It’s home to the last remaining pier in Yorkshire at 208m long and a funicular tramway dating back to 1884 that connects the Victorian town to the promenade below.

• A bit further down the coast is the pretty fishing village of Staithes. Full of cobbled streets and traditional fisherman’s cottages, I’ll easily lose an afternoon wandering with my camera.

• Just North of Whitby lies the village of Sandsend which comes recommended for lots of places to eat and drink in yet another very pretty setting.

• Robin Hood’s Bay is a steep, cliffside village full of alleyways and secret passages that once made it a smugglers haven. A day spent wandering the maze of streets, stopping in at independent shops and refuelling in a few of the many pubs, cafes, bakeries and tearooms would be a perfect end to the trip.

The Yorkshire coast has a bustling arts scene and no trip anywhere would be complete without seeking out some creatives so I’m keeping a list of places and events to look at including.

• I came across the Old Parcels Office Art Space which houses 7 artists studios as well as events and gallery spaces. It’s inside a Grade II listed building at Scarborough Station and looks to be a great hub to check out.

• Scarborough Cobble Market is a newly established market for 2026 taking place on the 2nd Sunday of every month. Featuring artists and makers as well as street food and live music.

• The Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage is a yearly event bringing together artists and creatives from across the village to open the doors to their cottages creating a series of pop up galleries.

• North Yorkshire Open Studios is an organisation led by artists to curate open studio events and exhibitions a few times a year featuring artists and makers across a range of different disciplines.

I’m taking you back to another misty morning this month. The Hermitage near Dunkeld is a well known area for walks. When I first started visiting many years ago it was so much quieter. Despite arriving at 8am on this particular morning, the car park was already filling up and the famous bridge had a steady stream of visitors enjoying the Autumn colour. With a bit of patience, I was able to get some atmospheric photos sans people. By the time we were leaving around 10am, there was a queue all the way up the A9 to get in.

I’ve been adding more of my photography to Good Mood prints and was thinking of adding in some landscape shots like this. Let me know if there are any you’d like to see as prints.
