The Wanderlust Issue #16

Welcome to Issue #16 of The Wanderlust, my monthly zine where I share what I’m up to, encourage you to dance, wander and explore and discover amazing new creative talent. I delve into my photo archives, share snippets from my travel journals and drop in the odd freebie. So if you know someone who you think might like this, feel free to share it with them.

I’ve had a slower start to Autumn this year which has felt unusual as I’m always so busy. Having been away to Barcelona at the end of the summer, I’ve been enjoying some much needed time at home, walking my local trails and watching the Autumn colours creep in.

A week spent over in Fife at a family caravan, strolling on the beaches and afternoon naps from all the sea air was a little added bonus. I don’t often power down so it was a reminder to schedule in some proper relaxation more regularly. We tried out Eden for some lunch, walked Maspie Den and town hopped along the East Neuk from Elie to Crail.

We’d earmarked Glen Lyon to revisit this year after just missing the Autumn colours up there last year. One of our favourite local drives takes us up to Aberfeldy, where we stopped at Fika for a coffee, around Loch Tay and back via Loch Earn at St Fillans. It was a surprisingly quiet Sunday in the glen (perhaps with the tearoom being closed) so I got some time to just play with my camera, no jostling for space as is becoming more common these days. I don’t think I’ve ever shared a pic straight from the back of my camera so here’s one I’ll be looking to process soon.

I’m long overdue a trip down to Glasgow and have quite a few new places on my list to visit.

• Glasgow’s Magazine Appreciation Society have been working on a weekend coffee spot to bring their love of magazines, coffee and analogue film together. Weekend opens this Saturday at The Barras on Kent Street.

• This Must Be The Place popped up on my Instagram feed recently and I immediately wanted to have a mooch. Brought to Glasgow’s Southside by product stylist and photographer Claire Nicholson, the shop is a beautifully curated colour lovers paradise full of homewares and gifts from lots of brands that I already love.

• Grateful Gallery on Hill Street has been on my list for a while now. Their latest exhibition Resist and Persist by Burds of the Brush runs until the 2nd of November and brings together over 40 international women, trans & non-binary sign painters to showcase their amazing work within the industry.

• Fook Mei is a newly opened restaurant on Glasgow’s London Road from the folks behind Ho Lee Fook. I absolutely love street food so I’m eager to check this out. You can get a little flavour for what they’ll be serving on their Instagram.

I’ve come across so many amazing colourful small brands recently and enjoyed watching their process videos or learning how their businesses came to be.

• Fluf are a sustainable Canadian brand making bags from organic cotton which they weave, print and dye themselves to create their own fabrics. I spied this colourful travel bag on This Must Be The Place’s online shop and now they’re on the list.

• Another sustainable brand to add to the list, Storigraphic are a design studio based in Cambridgeshire. Designers Nic and Roz create the most incredible, bold patterns for paper products and homewares. I’m always on the lookout for different wrapping paper for special gifts and they even offer a wrapping paper book which I think is a great idea. I love so many of their designs including this paper and this tea towel.

• Mediterranean design studio Octaevo are based in Barcelona. It was their colourful notebooks that first caught my eye. I’m a sucker for a passport sized, pocketable book, especially with a tactile cover. These screen printed linen ones are perfect for photo trips.

• Last but not least, I first came across Moglea when I was served one of their process videos on Instagram. It showed the production of their hand painted papers used to make all sorts of stationery. Imagine a little piece of hand painted art on your notebook cover. Love!

Another album I had on repeat when I first heard it, I Dare You from the album I See You is still one of my favourites from The xx.
