After a very hectic Spooky Season, I always look forward to the quiet darkness that comes with winter. The bright summer months give energy and light and the harvest time comes with much business and celebration. However, the long winter nights offer us the opportunity to draw inwards and rest.
When the season turns cold and dark, I will often head north and to a cabin in the woods for a solo meditation retreat. This year, I went to Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula. In the mornings, I meditate and practice yoga on the dock (even though it was -5C!). Then in the afternoons, I would hike the snowy Bruce Trail and not see any other people for hours at a time. When I returned home in the evenings, I would build a fire, play music, and rest.
The cold and the darkness always feel like a blessing to me. They allow me the quiet space I need to find myself again. I feel like we spend so much time trying to look directly into light sources that it can blind us to the more subtle elements of our life. Our dreams, for instance, only happen in the dark and quiet time of sleep. Hope comes to us in our darkest moments. And love finds us when we feel the most alone.
There is something magical in the quiet darkness that comes with winter. Though we may lament the challenges of winter weather, there are secret gifts hidden under the snow if we allow ourselves to be still enough to find them. I hope that on this longest night, you are all able to find the gifts that are waiting for you.
