The Week In Donuts

ITEM: I was recently interviewed by the wonderful Laura Starbuck Braidley for her equally wonderful Comic Boom podcast - I’ve actually been on the show before, back in its early days, so this was a lovely chance to have a chat and kind of check in on how things have changed with me and more generally with the state of comics in the UK in the last couple of years. Because on both fronts, it turns out things have changed quite a LOT, in quite a short space of time? Listen here, or in your preferred podcast app!

ITEM: I had a wonderful time in Lincoln the other week as part of the Waterstones Children’s Book Festival, and don’t worry if you missed it because the good news is that we are doing it all again, THIS SATURDAY, in London! I have been putting together a special show for the occasion including some Bonus Jokes and New Donuts that will NEVER BE SEEN IN PRINT, THIS I SWEAR. (I decided it might be good to have some jokes I keep for the live show, so that kids don’t just shout ALL the punchlines at me before I get to them?). Anyway it should be a super fun event - details and tickets from Waterstones!

ITEM: I believe tickets for Phoenixfest sold out in their customary five minutes flat, but don’t worry, citizens of Oxford! I will be at the Oxford Literary Festival on Sunday 29 March, with another fun opportunity to come along and see me draw some ridiculous carnage involving donuts, LIVE! Details and tickets here! There’s so many other brilliant artists and writers doing events for kids, too - I think just on the same day as me you’ve got Ramzee and the guys from the Beano - and indeed for grown-ups, if that is your kind of thing?

ITEM: I am excited to share that DONUT SQUAD TAKE OVER THE WORLD - or rather, DONUT SQUAD OVERTAGER VERDEN - is out now in Denmark, from Turbine Books! Please tell all your Danish friends immediately! It is very important that this book does very well so that I get invited to Denmark to talk about it, I have decided. Danish book link here!

I have no idea what I’m going to do with all these foreign editions piling up in my studio, but I do find them inexpressibly wonderful.

Okay it’s been a while since I recommended any comics on here; my reading time has been significantly impacted by the arrival in my house of LITERALLY 15KG OF TRANSFORMERS COMICS FROM THE 1980S. (It was a kickstarter thing. I was powerless to resist!) So I definitely recommend Transformers Comics From the 1980s, but that is possibly not news to anyone who knows me. So here’s a new one:

THE CRYSTAL VASE by Astrid Goldsmith - a slice of life observational travelogue about family relationships, and also a very specific and textured piece of history about the Jewish-European diaspora and the very worst parts of the 20th century. Warm, funny, and completely engrossing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

CONTEXT FREE DONUT SQUAD PANEL OF THE WEEK

Actually you know what, one little bit of context: I am a couple of weeks late on this but please welcome on board the newest member of Team Donut Squad, the brilliant illustrator, cartoonist and general multi-hyphenate Nick Moffatt, who is providing colouring on the strip every week as of…a couple of weeks ago? Anyway he’s absolutely smashing it. I had been a bit nervous about bringing someone in because… I don’t know, just because I am used to doing everything myself? And also, am a weirdo control freak. But Nick is so good and such a pleasure to work with that it’s been an absolute joy so far, and I look forward to giving him many more completely ridiculous things to colour in as we go along. Thanks Nick!
