What’s happening with the school closures is very confusing for everyone and my heart goes out to all of you students.
I know it sucks when a school announces a closure a few weeks before the term starts. Things should have been done in a better way. I also want to note that if the school closes students are eligible for closed school discharge. If you accept a closed school discharge, you generally can’t also use your credits toward a new program elsewhere and keep the discharge. You’d need to decide between transferring credits (and forgoing discharge) or starting fresh. BUT you could work and pay to go to ORCCA or MWAI or another school that makes a reasonable modular program. So there’s a relief on the debt with some potential there.
We’re hearing about some schools who are staying open and telling students they will have to take out private loans and this is absolutely criminal. Because then you can’t get the closed school discharge on those.1
So I know this AIMC thing sucks and lots of things should have happened in a better way up to this point. At this moment though, we need schools to choose shitty closures over maliciously advocating for private loans.
Please keep us updated if you learn anything more. We really appreciate when students email us and let us know what’s going on. If you want it to be anonymous, go post on Reddit at r/acupuncturestudentdebt and we can get the info that way too, plus other students can comment on what they are experiencing with that particular institution.
We will try and put together a tool kit for students who are feeling in crisis around this too. Let us know in the comments if there’s anything you think that would be good in that tool kit.
Hang in there.
Closed school discharge is federal-only. It’s authorized under Title IV regulations (34 CFR 685.214) and applies specifically to federal Direct Loans. Private loans have no equivalent federal discharge mechanism.
