Jehoshaphat’s prayer is one of the strangest in Scripture, because it is essentially a surrender speech delivered to God.
We have no might. We do not know what to do. Our eyes are on you.
Three admissions. No strategy. No leverage. And it is recorded as one of the great victories of the Old Testament.
We are trained out of this. We are taught to approach God the way we approach a lender — with a proposal, a track record, a plan for repayment. So we arrive at the altar with our fasting record and our giving history and our years of faithfulness, quietly hoping these constitute a case.
But Psalm 18:17 is not a reward for strength. It is a rescue from weakness. They were too strong for me — that admission is not the disqualifier in the verse. It is the reason the verse exists.
If the thing you are bringing to Stratford has already beaten you, you are not coming from a position of shame. You are coming from the position that this psalm was written about.
