John Naughton · My Life, in Color

Ohio and Iowa share a few key details: Four letters, three vowels and fun state fairs.

I recently visited the Columbus, Ohio, event, which ran from July 29 to August 9.

My discoveries: Good food, lots of space and some unique things that larger fairs like Iowa and Minnesota don’t have.

The good.

Ohio’s state fair is a good showcase for the Buckeye State.

There’s lots of typical fair stuff: A butter cow, midway, unique crafts for sale and good food.

The Ohio Showcase Building opened this year and is a spectacular combination of fair museum, food hall and theater. The latter shows a repeating video about the history of Ohio. It’s loaded with patriotic feelings and scenes of the rural and urban nature of the state.
