How I survived the nation's biggest buffet restaurant

I came hungry, I left humbled.

Diners line up at the Shady Maple Smorgasbord in East Earl, Pennsylvania — the world’s largest buffet restaurant — and prepare for what seems to be a competitive eating event.

When I visited the Amish country eatery July 3, I was ready to dive in, fork, knife and spoon. After all, I love a good buffet for the dining options and had experienced everything from Las Vegas to the Golden Corral.

Yet this was a challenge that went beyond the typical all-you-can-eat experience.

Shady Maple can accommodate up to 2,000 guests (plus additional banquet space). On a holiday weekend, the sprawling complex can be overwhelming.

People swarm over the 200-foot long main buffet line with an overwhelming energy. There are grill stations with cooks that bombard you with brisket or burgers. The self-serve beverage machines pour out juices, soft drinks and delightful coffee drinks.

But is it worth the stress of fighting with half a dozen other people over the last few pieces of fried shrimp?

Possibly! But the eating game here is not for the timid or impatient.
