The Jew-Weed

Anyone who has followed my blog for even a short time has probably picked up on the fact that I'm a Homesteader and promote Homesteading and self-sufficiency. As part of that, the Homesteader is required to keep up fence lines and trees, just general maintenance for both safety and beauty.

Now in my part of the country we have this parasite vine that grows up from the ground like it's bursting forth from a demon crypt deep in the Earth. This vine surely has a proper scientific name, but I call it the Jew-Weed.

This weed, the Jew-Weed, serves no purpose. It will wrap itself around a healthy tree to suck the nutrients from the bark and leaves, bushes too. This Jew-Weed is not beautiful at all, and it doesn't produce any berries or fruit or anything anyone would ever find useful. It seems to be especially fond of wrapping itself around young trees so that as the young tree grows, it can't grow as fully as it should and becomes stunted. Certainly an issue if you want to cultivate fruit or nut trees and maintain optimal production.

So what is to be done?

In fighting back the Jew-Weed, the Homesteader must be merciless. The Jew-Weed has large thorns to try and protect itself, it will wrap around your feet in an attempt to trip you up. However armed with quality tools, like powerful hedge trimmers and chainsaws, short work can be made of this annoying life sucking pest plant. Just dive in and start hacking away. Sure, you're likely to get slapped in the face a time or two, and have bleeding hands for awhile, but that's a sacrifice that must be made. But once you are finished, your fence line and trees will be free of this annoying and destructive pest.

Now this part is critical. Be vigilant! The Jew-Weed may be beaten back to whatever fiery pit of Hell it originates from, but it will try to return. If this happens, burn it out. That's right, do a controlled burn, and just burn that Jew-Weed right outta the ground.
