Loyal readers of Nation of Artisans may remember that last month, as part of London Craft Week, I sat on a panel at Sotheby’s entitled: “The Future of Craft: How do we keep our heritage skills alive?”
For those of you who could not make it, Sotheby’s have now put it up online as a podcast. It’s part of their excellent podcast series, Sotheby’s Talks.
I joined James Haldane, Executive Editor of Sotheby’s Magazine, Daniel Carpenter, Executive Director of Heritage Crafts, and Lucy Brown, CEO of the Hugo Burge Foundation discuss the future of craft and explore what it takes to keep craft alive in the modern world.
Answering tricky questions such as: Which skills matter most, and why? How can they be sustained, reimagined and made viable for the future? And what is lost when forms of knowledge rooted in the hand begin to disappear?
For fans of the Cræft Prize, this is just more of the same. For prize’s enemies, the talk gets very deep into the innovative power of craft as a blueprint for restraining the worst excesses of technological development.
