A pastor friend recently told me the craziest story about a celebrity guest speaker at his conference.
It goes like this. My friend invited the guy to speak at his massive conference — a fantastic communicator with a legitimate gift. The two of them weren’t on the same page on a couple of finer points of doctrine, but no big deal. Finer points of doctrine, to me, aren’t an issue of fellowship — so long as we don’t make them one. I’ll unpack that in a minute.
Before the conference, my friend reached out and asked me how to broach the subject — how to run a little interference on the topic in question without making it weird. I gave him my two cents: “Just text him. Thank him for coming, tell him you’re excited to have him, ask him to speak on such-and-such — and ask him to steer clear of XYZ. Make it abundantly clear.”
My friend did exactly that. The speaker agreed.
