Deciding on a North Star is one of the most helpful ideas I’ve come across when designing interiors. It helps keep me on track, and something I always recommend to clients.
When you’re choosing between materials, colours, layouts or furniture, you can come back to one simple question:
Does this move me closer to the home I’m trying to create?
But sometimes we don’t know what we want.
Or we become overwhelmed by too many possibilities.
That’s when a South Star can be useful…
Can you describe your style?
What about how you want your home to look and feel?
Do you know what you want to do with your career… and life?
If you’re struggling to answer these questions, it can be challenging to have a North Star — a destination that guides your decisions.
When this happens, perhaps it’s time to try something different.
Start with the opposite. Get clear on what you don’t want.
Here are some questions to help you discover your South Star:
What don’t I like?
What feels “off” or out of alignment?
What have I promised myself I wouldn’t do again?
What consistently leaves me feeling disappointed, drained or frustrated?
What decisions have I regretted in the past?
Clarity doesn’t often come from adding more options. It comes from eliminating what you don’t need.
Whether you’re designing a home, building a business or making a big life decision, your South Star can be just as valuable as your North Star.
It won’t tell you where to go, but it will help you avoid heading in the wrong direction.
