My last post here was on the first of April. I had big plans. A big goal. A month of offline creativity that I dreamt of turning into a group activity. I wanted to grow this space here, and invite everyone in to join me. I was taking the advice I saw plastered all over the internet, jump into things messily! progress over perfection! Just try it, it will all work out!
But life happened. My son got sick. We had to travel for a family wedding. My husband started a new job. I had almost no time to myself. I did my week of my meticulously planned out challenges, but I never shared a moment of it online and I sure as hell didn’t complete any of the rest of my month. And I’ve stared back at the whole thing feeling like a complete and utter failure. To have proudly announced to the world (in my own mind) my big plans and then to be immediately humbled by it, stung.
I don’t speak about motherhood on the internet. I don’t hide that I have a son, but I don’t share him and I definitely don’t talk about how becoming a mother has changed who I am as a person and lately I’ve been doubting that decision.
I feel like there’s enough people out there who talk about the highs and lows of bringing a child into the world and sometimes by not making things about my child online, I get to preserve a piece of myself from before I became a mother. I can present to the world separate from another human being, I can just be me. Enough other people are doing the “mom” thing, why do I need to, too? I just want to share my own art and my creativity and get people engaging with craft and the practice of making.
I’ve never thought that being a mother was the most important thing a woman could do - and I do cherish this part of my life that feels protected from it. But the reality is that motherhood touches every single thing I do, and this is very much included. Even if I pretend like it doesn’t.
And so here we are. I’m back, not with my tail between my legs but with the knowledge that unfortunately falling flat on your face is an invitation to pick yourself back up not to walk away out of embarrassment. No one is more pressed about my own successes and failures than I am myself and part of parenthood is literally just lowering the expectations and this is a part of my own life that I want to be more transparent about, in whatever way possible.
The vast majority of you are just here for vibes, and I know it probably hasn’t even registered to you that I’ve been quiet, but I do have a few paid subs (I have something special coming for you guys on Thursday) that I sincerely feel that I have disapointed, and that makes me sad. So I’ve spent some time this week thinking and planning and prepping for this to be a more regular, consistent space, and I want to tell you all the plans. No big creative endavours or challenges, just stuff I’m working on.
This month you can expect:
A recent project recap with links to all patterns, supplies, inspo, etc (next week!)
Paid only: a treasure trove of vintage craft inspiration, patterns, and resources
The modern craftspeople inspiring me most right now
Paid only: My summer crafting plans
So for today, that’s all. Fun stuff coming. Thanks for being here and thanks for supporting me. I appreciate you all so much and happy crafting.
If you have any requests, thoughts, hopes, whatever, please let me know! I want to hear and see what you’re working on, always.
x
Naomi
