The temperatures here (and apparently a lot of places) are very hot and steamy. Combine that with all the inside work I have to do…I’m feeling trapped within my home. That is why it was so important to find a break and get out last weekend.

Ganoderma curtisii meredithiae - A fungus species found primarily in the forests of Southeastern US

We went for a walk on a short trail in a nearby state park. It has been a several years since I walked this trail. Since then, so many new, large houses have been built right up to the Park’s property line. Nice for the new homeowners to have their backyard adjacent to the park. Not so nice for those walking and not interested in looking at the swimming pools and lawn furniture adjacent to the protected trees. Things are changing so rapidly here…at least this one tiny plot is protected (for now).

I struggle with this dilemma, because I’m an interloper too. The land that I call home once had towering “old growth” longleaf pine trees. I try to preserve what’s here, but I also have non-native species growing on our plot (some I’ve even planted). If I can’t live to the standards I expect, then who am I to judge? Its a sad juggle to watch the transformation of so many things.
