I knew this all along: only in America could I have had the life I have enjoyed, working with other people to build community within the realm of the greatest music imaginable.
Nowhere else could a woman have done this, certainly not a young woman lacking viable, i.e., visible credentials. And certainly not relying entirely on the resources of community, measured in terms not only financial, but also in terms of expertise, experience, personal generosity of time and support.
