I have spent more time with family recently — with family visiting from abroad, family nearby, and also, with myself.
These have included long meals, unhurried conversations, discussions on history, politics, and the slow life. The kind of conversations where nobody really checks the time.
It made me wonder whether we have confused being busy with living fully or productively. Or perhaps we have simply become conditioned to staying busy.
Here are a few words that stayed with me this week.
“Stop and Smell the Roses” (English phrase)
I have loved this phrase since I was a child. Perhaps because it has roses in it. And I always loved to stop and smell the roses in my school!
Its a a reminder we have heard countless times. And perhaps one we ignore the most.
Life isn’t only happening between milestones.
It is happening now.
Insight: Presence is a practice.
Unhurried
Its when you move with intention, and not with urgency.
The opposite of rushing isn’t laziness.
It’s attention.
Insight: The pace of your life shapes the quality of your conversations.
Dolce Far Niente (Italian)
Literally, the sweetness of doing nothing.
Not wasting time. Enjoying it.
Not every moment needs to be productive to be meaningful.
Insight: Sometimes rest isn’t a reward. It is part of a well-lived life.
A thought to carry into the weekend
Life doesn’t always ask us to do more. Sometimes, it simply asks us to notice more.
A slower conversation. A longer meal. A quiet afternoon.
Not because they are extraordinary.
But because they are the moments we often rush past.
