Quinn

Short and sweet, sleek and neat, Quinn manages to be playful and refined at the same time. Currently in the US Top 100 for girls and Top 500 for boys, that Q initial makes it one that stands out – depside how familiar it actually is.

Ultimately derived from the Irish name Conn — borne a king of Irish legend — Quinn doesn’t mean “fifth” or “five” like its soundalikes Quincy, Quinton, and Quintas may imply. Instead, it’s said to mean “reason, sense” or “chief, head”.

On the rise since the sixties, Quinn has been bolstered up the charts by actors Anthony Quinn and Quinn Redeker, while for girls, the character of Quinn Fabray in Glee transformed it into a feminine leaning unisex option back in 2010, when it climbed 234 places, making it one of the fastest rising names of the year. Right now in the US, the split is 80% girls and 20% boys, but over in the UK, remains much more neutral, split around 60:40.

Quinn was actually my mum’s suggestion — a name she likes mostly because of the song The Mighty Quinn.
