The ludus sat on the eastern outskirts of Pompeii, a sprawl of stone buildings baking under the Campanian sun. Marcus had been there for fifteen years, long enough to watch fighters arrive as trembling boys and leave either as champions or in funeral urns. He knew the smell of the place: sweat, cured leather, and the iron tang of old blood ingrained into the sand of the training ground.
The new intake arrived mid-morning. Marcus was stretching his left shoulder, a scar-tissue rebellion from last season’s contests, when the ludus master herded them through the gate. They were young men, mostly, with the stunned look of cattle at the abattoir. One of them caught his attention immediately. He was perhaps twenty, with the kind of broad chest and narrow waist that suggested hard labour rather than the softness of the city. Dark hair fell across a brow damp with heat. His name, Marcus would learn, was Caius.
By custom and hierarchy, Marcus was tasked with showing the new men to their quarters. The ludus master grunted his approval; Marcus was reliable. Boring, some might say. Marcus didn’t care. Survival was the only reputation that mattered in the shadow of Vesuvius.
He led Caius to the cells where the fighters slept: single bunks, thin straw, and one small window high in the wall. The accommodations were meant to remind them they were property, though Marcus had learned to appreciate the simplicity. There was no pretence here, and no hidden meanings in conversation. Just stone and necessity.
“You’ll be with me,” Marcus said, gesturing to the spare bunk. “Keep your kit clean, keep yourself clean, and do not touch my things. We shall get along.”
Caius nodded, setting down a cloth bag. Their eyes met for a fraction too long. Marcus felt a low, heavy thrum in his gut, a sensation he had learned long ago to ignore. The boy was beautiful in a way that felt like an insult to the dirt surrounding them.
The training ground was merciless. Watching Caius move through the exercises was like watching a younger version of himself, yet more fluid. The younger man fought with a desperate grace, as though every strike was both an act of aggression and a plea for notice.
