The word prostitute is used in modern dialect to define a person- generally a woman- being used and consumed for someone else’s desire.
She is the passive recipient of another’s will and so she fundamentally lacks agency.
She is the space where something is done to her.
Colloquially it is used to describe someone’s choice to offer their service or labor in a way that cheapens the value of that service or demeans them as a person.
Rarely does it ever cross a persons mind that a prostitute could be an artist of pleasure.
In an active, rather than passive role.
This is the reality of The Sacred Prostitute. A reality that defies every definition of how we use the word.
Perhaps the tragically passive and exploited definition of prostitution is due to the many tragic, real life examples we have of this being the case.
But I sense it is about more than this. It is about how we view sex, pleasure, the erotic and the role of women in a sexual encounter.
In my experiences of sharing about my life as a prostitute, people consistently struggled to wrap their minds around my experience. It defied all their expectations and assumptions.
Some people might assume that my experience was made possible because I was not engaging in sexual intercourse. I don’t believe that this is the case. I know exactly how I could be a Sacred Prostitute by taking men into my body. It is not the act so much that defines the experience but the way it is engaged.
A Sacred Prostitute is a guide. She is the active role in the experience, guiding the seeker to surrender to her lead. And ultimately, to surrender to the moment and something greater than their own will.
This makes the Sacred Prostitute experience a reversal of the sexual and gender dynamics that define masculinity and femininity in patriarchy. It exists beyond the confines of all we have come to believe about sex, men and women.
Patriarchal Femininity is - among other things- about submission. A feminine woman is lead by a man. She submits to his desires, his leadership and his will. And in the romanticized versions of this collective erotic mythos- she is lead with expert care and guidance. He leads her with attunement to her highest good. He knows what is best for her and so her surrender to him is not abusive or disempowering- but profoundly loving and nourishing. Here, she gets to melt into what many call her “true feminine nature” which I have heard many a polarity teacher and tik tok “feminine energy” influencer describe as “turning off her mind”.
Here, we see the feminine charicaturized as submissive, surrendered, led and without thoughts...
