Your Paid Subscriptions Are Supporting Women in India!

We started the women’s economic empowerment program in New Delhi two months ago, after first teaching the women literacy classes. The program is called “Naari Shakti” (“The Strength of Women”). Indeed, these women are incredibly strong. And if you are a paid subscriber, the funds I raise through this blog go to the women of this program and the children of the Asha School in Kathmandu, so I wanted to give you an update.

Yesterday was India’s 80th Independence Day. The program held a celebration, and the women put on a fashion show to display the clothes they had made. Bear in mind that these women knew nothing about tailoring or using sewing machines until two months ago. They come from very traditional families and have had very little freedom. Even coming out of their homes is a huge hurdle. The program managers often have to ask permission from the men in the households.

In those two short months, the women have learned to design, cut, and stitch beautiful outfits such as the one in the video. I personally check the quality of the workmanship, and it is top-notch. I have asked the women to make clothes that we can sell, so we will be able to get some income to reinvest in the program.

What impresses me most is the enthusiasm, eagerness, and dedication the women have shown. They are learning so fast! And they love having fun! I have great respect for them. If I lived in the conditions they do, I don’t think I would have the same resilience they display. These women are my heroes, and they are teaching me so much!
