One of my favorite parts of building Modern Mysticism has been introducing you to thoughtful voices from across the spiritual community. While our practices may differ, I love discovering ideas that bring us back to the same place: living with greater awareness, intention, and authenticity.
This month, I’m delighted to welcome Mark Jacobs of MANY PATHS Connected. In this reflective essay, Mark explores the difference between simply setting an intention and truly living in alignment with it. Rather than viewing manifestation as something we “make happen,” he invites us to consider what becomes possible when our thoughts, heart, body, and actions begin moving in the same direction.
Enjoy the read, and I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments afterward.

This week has invited me to slow down.
As I wandered beneath the trees, I found myself thinking about intention. We speak of it often in spiritual or ritual circles. We set intentions at the beginning of a new year or write them in a coveted journal before the day begins. There is something meaningful about pausing long enough to ask ourselves how we want to live.
But I kept returning to a different question.
Am I following the energy of my intention?
I can intend to create more, love more deeply, live with greater courage, or become more present. Yet if my actions, my attention, and my energy continue moving in another direction—or no direction at all—the intention remains little more than a constrained idea.
That realization immediately changed the way I think about manifestation.
Over the past year, I’ve spent time exploring the Merlin archetype. What continues to fascinate me isn’t the magic itself but the presence behind it. Merlin doesn’t seem to force outcomes or chase certainty. He listens. He observes. He waits until inner knowing and outer action become one.
Perhaps that is the real magic.
Many of us have been taught that manifestation begins with thinking positively or visualizing what we want. While those practices have value, I’ve found they are only the beginning. An intention held only in the mind remains cut off from the rest of us. It directs our lives to change without asking us to change first.
An intention held only in the mind remains an idea. An intention embraced by the whole being becomes a living force.
When the soul nudges and the heart says yes, the mind grows clear, the body begins moving in the same direction, and our energy naturally follows. We stop trying to convince the universal life force to cooperate with us because we have stepped into our greater power. We have become coherent within ourselves.
From the outside, that kind of alignment can look almost instantaneous. Opportunities appear. Conversations unfold at just the right time. Doors begin opening.
People often call it manifestation.
I think it is simply coherence becoming visible.
Lately, I’ve also found myself reflecting on how much energy people invest in searching for answers somewhere beyond themselves. We long for certainty, for signs that explain what is happening in our lives and in our world. Yet some of the deepest revelations arrive much more intimately. They emerge through stillness, discernment, and a willingness to notice what has already begun awakening within us.
The Everyday Mystic—or what I sometimes call the Working Mystic—isn’t separated from ordinary life. They still answer emails, walk the dog, prepare dinner, and navigate deadlines. Their practice isn’t escaping the world but meeting it with greater presence and intention. Every conversation, every choice, every act becomes another opportunity to align with what matters most…another opportunity to follow the energy.
That kind of alignment requires practice.
It asks us to become quiet enough to hear what our soul is inviting rather than what our fears are demanding. It asks us to release our attachment to the exact shape an outcome must take while remaining committed to its deeper essence.
I’ve noticed that life often responds more generously when I stop insisting on the destination and remain faithful to the direction.
Perhaps intention has never been about controlling the future.
Perhaps it has always been about becoming the person who can meet it.
When our heart, soul, mind, body, and energy begin moving together, something extraordinary happens. We no longer experience intention as something we occasionally set. It becomes something we embody.
And that may be the most authentic kind of magic there is.
