Mrs. Money Mustache: The Secret Life of Frugality

Since being on island time and completing Rebel Finance School 2025 (again), I have rediscovered Mr Money Mustache and his fantastic money blog. Always been aware of MMM and his ‘financial freedom from badassity’ and had previously subscribed to his 52 week ‘best of’ articles.

Now I am up for the hardcore challenge, starting at # 1 (from 6 April 2011) and reading 1-2 posts each morning. Unfortunately, I find myself dealing with becoming a midlife-fan-girl and regretting my lack of devotion and attention to this resource from its inception. It would have propelled me toward FIRE much earlier if only I had followed his sage advice. Nearly 15 years of absolute gold - even if I don’t have facial hair or a love affair with carpentry tools.

Anyway, his (ex)-wife Mrs Money Mustache makes random appearances and wanted to share her wisdom from her very first blog. I was struggling with the concept of early retirement and I totally agree with her philosophy.

Early retirement is not about having a lot of money. It’s about having choices. It’s about finding yourself. You need to discard that old stuffy image of retirement where couples buy an RV and take up touring the country, or just sit around at home and occasionally play golf. Early retirement is a lifestyle and it is unique for everyone.

Frankly, I don’t really like the words “early retirement”, as it doesn’t convey the true meaning. For me, it was life-changing and unexpected. It changed me in unthinkable ways. It brought me all kinds of things: happiness, balance, change, freedom, time, travel, family, motherhood, and health. But, most of all, I found myself.
