I’ve recently had a two extended periods off activity. Firstly due to a broken collarbone, and then recovery from a hernia operation. Each time I have come back with a noticeable dip in fitness. Additionally, I have returned to the gym and after time off, that has led to some very sore muscles, especially biceps and triceps.
This has led to some “limitations” which actually improve my aikido. When my arms are sore I cannot use strength. Of course I shouldn’t be relying on that anyway but being physically incapable of it forces me to relax and use my movement instead. I also feel very quickly if I am starting to use strength, so it acts as a warning system too.
I am gradually getting back to full fitness but I hope I can use these lessons to further develop my focus on movement, and maybe get relaxation into muscle memory in place of muscle soreness.
