B of Briz- Song so Good
An unsolicited email (I welcome them, particularly directly from artists!) led to this discovery. B is a Bristol-based rapper and producer and this is one of her defiantly anti-fascist bangers, part of a double A-side release. It’s a great track with a really effective minimalist feel - all that space between the throbbing bassline and sparse piano run somehow makes it more hard hitting.
Cinder Well - Beyond the Pale
Beautiful in its fragility, memorable for its crystalline minimalism, a song built on this artist’s mysterious imagination and haunting vocals. If you don’t know her yet, I recommend getting acquainted with her repertoire.
Greysha - Endgame
Another brilliantly written and produced, dark alt-pop banger from Greysha. There’s a metallic edge to the sound, with spiralling synths carrying the artists vocals through and around you. Deeply self-reflective and yet with a sense of moving up and forward with rebellious triumphalism.
mary in the junkyard - Mouse
mary in the junkyard are a new discovery every time. Despite having built a solid catalogue of music, each track the trio produces is a genuinely intriguing art piece: a treasure uncovered, run through with veins of intense creative thought. ‘Mouse’ only confirms this… Full review in the latest DIY Neu Bulletin
Our Man In the Field - Wall Of Sound
I discovered this guy at Twisterella last year and really enjoy the wide open, best-of-the-West feel he creates in his songs, which are always personal and intriguing. This one is a classic, opening with a lick of brassy chords and settling into a toe-tapping lilt. Hammond organ, lashing of lead guitar and a fervently laidback delivery all conspire to create something unavoidably catchy.
I also highly recommend Alien Chicks’ amazing cover of ‘Get Ur Freak On’
Gracie Abrams proving her live skills again. A simultaneously heartbreaking and lush rendition of ‘Hit The Wall’.
You’ll have seen my notes about the gig I organised at The Grove in Nottingham… I was blown away by the support I received and the night was a wonderful celebration of music and togetherness.
