Bonnie Kemplay - Bones
Hazy and intimate vibes permeate this typically deep-dreamt song which features beautifully entangled lyrics. Deeply relatable stuff - and check out the rest of the EP.
Lily Juniper - One Night Blues
Thick with nostalgia and subtly intense with the bubbling synth line which builds to a beautiful intensity as the song progresses. This is a deftly thought out track, immensely relaxed and still somehow powerful. Debut album in September!
PYJÆN and Ella Clayton - Shades of July
A jazz/folk fusion which works wonderfully, making the most of Ella’s uniquely rich and mellow vocals and PYJÆN’s multidimensional performance.
Toria Wooff - Eileen
Gothic folk, misty with ambience and rich sounds; a fireside story set to imaginative tones. It’s semi-hushed, with carefully picked out guitar tones and the mysterious drone of what sounds like a small organ before brass and strings join.
I also highly recommend ‘heal my soul’ by Amistat and ‘These Are The Days’ by Our Man In The Field
While I was at Deer Shed last weekend, I grabbed a quick interview with Gretel (a text to my PR contact during her set as I realised how much I needed to hear from her, and then a chat in the backstage area which at this festival is the main building of a Catholic girls’ school) Here’s the interview. I love this one — she really doesn’t pull any punches when talking about the industry and letting go of past ideas of “success”.
For me, Madra Salach (above) stole the show at Deer Shed. The second time I’ve seen them, and just incredible. Try and catch them on tour if you can - details here.
Another set which stood out was Roller Disco Death Party’s! Basically, fun! (Bonus points for spotting me in the photo below). My full report for CLASH is here.
