Longtime John’s Music Blog friend and collaborator F.G.S. finally has new music. In a world overflowing with stock Americana, here is an artist who, through the combination of uncanny world building and lyrical vision, is able to make something that can stand alone within an overflowing space. And don’t get me started on Chase’s chops. There is a lot of lore to unpack. I haven’t even talked about Flannery’s history as a wedding planner or the time I put out a seven-inch for her experimental music duo (Lil Ugly Mane remix on the B-side).
ksuuvi (feat. elibanss) “shake n bake”
It’s not just the Beanie Sigel flip. Look beyond the overloaded sonics of “shake n bake” and you will find a classic East Coast rap song. In a more interesting world, Flex would be rewinding it on Hot 97. But the tides might be turning. Those xaviorsobased Airbnb ads have to mean something?
A little breakbeat playfulness for the adult rave set: Pump Media Unlimited representative C Powers throws down a fairly nasty Baltimore-ish remix of an eternal Dave Matthews Band song, adding Khia’s equally important “My Neck, My Back (Lick It)” into the flow. In this house, we respect mash-up culture. Someone’s got to!
One of the major wiggly electronica talents of the moment continues to blossom before our very blog eyes with a tune that sees high sound design pummel combine with some rather tasteful vocoder work. And those skippy claps are perfect for your Wayne Wonder Summer.
E-40 x Juvenile “Sumn Ain’t Right”
My local Spirit Halloween outpost has already opened up its doors, so it doesn’t not make sense that these two legends are, in their new video, sidling their way through a haunted mansion in the woods. But that’s not why “Sumn Ain’t Right” is making its way into the halls of The Report. It’s an excellent articulation of the longstanding musical exchange between New Orleans and the Bay and a smart division of labor: 40 on the verses, Juvenile handles the hook.

Only Graham Hunt could make a Beck-damaged breakbeat blast, dripping with Auto-Tune, and then seamlessly segue to something like “Getting Older,” a traditional jangler with a chorus made to devastate you and your 2002 Toyota Corolla as you make the drive from your apartment to the nearest Culver’s to pick up an order of cheese curds.
A new school psych hero from across the pond dips into his Jason Spaceman bag, calls up his friend Rowan and more than a few backup singers, and kicks out the kind of druggy indie gospel tune that has been absent from the larger conversation for more than a minute. But the cheeky bugger throws in enough MIDI moves to keep it from sounding like something made by a LARPer in paisley.
The Tubs signature Celtic pop stomp has me doing a damn jig in my living room, feeling like a character in a Hugh Grant rom-com. If this isn’t the rocking chorus of the year, I don’t know. Maybe it needs to enter a cage match with that Graham Hunt tune and fight it out.

Brainwash Victims live at A1, Providence 4/26/26
Sometimes a casual stumble through the punk corner of YouTube pays off, big time. Case in point: while scoping a set by Midwest band Brainwash Victims, I hit a double take. Was that Mark Winter, the egg punk architect, on guitar? Some light recon affirmed my suspicion. I was wondering what that guy was up to… Turns out he is playing in a raging d-beat trio. Keep it moving, people! Nothing quirked-up to see here, except for maybe the punks in the pit, who make clever use of couch cushions.

They were calling it the “Milwaukee Rolling Loud.” I was considering flying in for the event, though that did not end up happening, so I’m glad the Run Along Forever crew documented this monumental meeting of Wisconsin rap minds. A lot of highlights, including the first ever Certified Trapper show at Cactus Club and a set from Lightris, who has been on a hot streak lately, but arguably the biggest response of the night came from the artist with the city’s area code in his name: 414bigfrank.
