On Monday, 20 April, the members of the Security Council (SC) at Model United Nations of the Far West agreed on a consensus resolution to ease escalating tensions in Syria as a result of continuous live firing between the parties involved that could lead to more than a simple regional conflict. Diplomats said the agreement was reached in a struggle as part of the urgency of the situation.
It took the delegates long hours of work starting in the morning on 19 April, after which the Secretary-General used the provisions set forth under Article 99 of the charter of the United Nations (UN), which is quite rare. This allows for the presentation of a threat to international peace to the SC in a fast and efficient manner. The delegates consulted information gathered from their governments throughout the day and into the evening.
By the end of the evening, the Member States arrived at a consensus agreement, whereby an effort to put an end to the hostilities through diplomatic means was instructed. The talks between Syria and Turkey would be mediated through Colombia and Russia. These talks led to the creation of what is being called the “Doha Agreement.”
With the resolution passed and negotiations concluded, the Council is now finalizing an official statement through the Office of the President of the SC. This statement will publicly affirm the agreement and outline next steps for implementation.
