You Don’t Need to Be a Pastor to Make Disciples

You’ve sat through the sermons. You’ve read the books. You know your Bible.

But if someone asked you how you are helping another person follow Jesus, you might not know what to say.

That gap is not a knowledge problem. You don’t need another course. You need a first step, some practice reps, and someone who will show you how it’s actually done.

That’s what this publication is for.

I write about the practical side of following Jesus and helping other people follow him too. Not theory. Not a five-year strategic plan for your church. Just the actual, doable things that move a person from curious to obedient to reproducing.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

Jesus entrusted the Great Commission to ordinary disciples. Fishermen. A tax collector. People who learned by following him. Not spiritual professionals.

He said go and make disciples, teaching them to obey everything he commanded. He did not say wait until you’re qualified. He did not say leave it to the professionals.

Most Christians I meet already believe this in theory. What they lack is practice. Disciple-making is learned through obedience, repetition, correction, and imitation. Jesus’ disciples learned by watching him, practicing what he taught, getting it wrong, and trying again.

My wife Megan and I have spent years in New York City trying to live this out with everyday people. Not everything we’ve tried has worked.

But we’ve learned enough to know the path is simpler than most Christians think, and much harder than most Christians expect.

The goal isn’t to become a sharper Bible student or a more polished church attender. The goal is to follow Jesus, help someone else follow him, and teach them to do the same for another person. When that starts happening, churches can grow right out of the harvest.

Multiplication isn’t about hype or speed or big numbers. It’s about handing someone a way of following Jesus they can actually pass on.
