Starvation is Israel's More Lethal Genocidal Weapon Than Mass Murder

The world often reacts to war through the lens of explosions—counting bodies, broadcasting rubble. But there is a far deadlier, more invisible weapon being wielded against Palestinian children: starvation. It’s drawn out, insidious, and excruciating. Even if those who survive, they never fully recover and they pass the damage down to generations. This is not collateral damage—this is calculated deprivation; creating conditions that would bring about a group’s destruction in whole or in part (i.e. genocide).

On the 1st day of malnutrition, the baby cries from abdominal pain as they go through rapid energy depletion; within hours, their body consumes glycogen stores in the liver and muscles, blood sugar drops, lips begin to tremble, eyes keep opening and closing, and crying becomes intermittent.

On day 2, the child's body begins to eat itself, first using fat as an energy source. The infant's arms and legs become thinner, their face shrivels and they lose the ability to cry. They sleep longer and experiences convulsion that reflect their abdominal pain.

After 3-4 days, the fat under the baby's skin is consumed, the body begins to break down muscle for protein. This leaves the infant unable to lift their head or sit, makes their rib cage and spine more prominent as skin becomes very thin.

After 10 days, muscle wasting is compounded by a diminished immune system, as the child's lymph nodes shrink and the number of white blood cells declines. Any passing illness, even a cold or diarrhea, could kill them.

By the third week of starvation, the child has lost two-thirds of their body weight, they also lose their hair. They reach the final stage, where they suffer from weak and irregular heartbeats and breathing becomes extremely difficult. At any moment, they could be taking their last breath or last heart beat and their eyelids close forever.

Even if a child is given food after days of hunger, they would still suffer permanent and life-changing mental and physical damage. This includes muscle wasting, stunted growth, sepsis, meningitis, severe anemia, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and metabolic disorders.

A recent study found that “even 48 weeks after children recovered from acute malnutrition, they continued to show signs of inflammation in the gut and throughout their body, making them more likely to be readmitted to a hospital and die.”

That damage is even passed down to descendants and future generations.

Israel’s starvation of Gaza is a more potent and enduring form of genocide than bombs. It scars not just the body and mind, but the generations that follow. The deliberate withholding of food and aid—while cameras look elsewhere—inflicts permanent physical and psychological damage on children and their future children. What we are witnessing is not just war—it is the slow, deliberate erasure of a people. And silence, in the face of this suffering, is complicity.
