First, thank you so much to all who bought our new Socratic Cards. They’ve almost sold out in just a week! And while there are a few “Muffy” Signature Edition decks left, once they go, they are gone.
Having said that, we now have a fresh printing of what we call the Standard Edition up on the site as well, and also ready to ship. This deck features the same 50 questions and the same Socratic Cards back pattern, but the font is smaller, the logo is smaller, and in place of the “Muffy” card, it has a more traditional description. In other words, it may be better suited for that young male heading off to college, for work colleagues, and for a broader audience in general than the more chummy “Muffy” edition.
Next, as my search for new items for autumn goes on, I continue to hit roadblocks seemingly everywhere. Mostly due to taste, but increasingly due to my oft-mentioned natural fiber dilution. On a hopeful note, I keep hearing about how Gen Z is pushing back on all the synthetic fibers infiltrating our clothing, and not falling for the “performance fabrics”, “technical”, “stretch”, or “vegan leather” hard sell. Apparently Gen Z values wearability and biodegradable more than profit margins. Perhaps that demand will drive more of the markets going forward.
So also along that note, I do have some lovely examples of more upmarket items, more carefully designed, and where you can find pure cotton or pure wool, evermore difficult to ferret out.
Started in London, With Nothing Underneath (WNU) has been around for almost ten years now, with a focus on classic Men’s shirting but sized for women, a strong focus on sustainable fibers, and an equally strong focus on taste and style. A sartorial trifecta. So much 100% cotton, and often 100% organic cotton. (It also doesn’t hurt that a certain massively popular young royal wears them.)
Standout shirting to me includes, and would be the place to begin, The Boyfriend - Linen (Lapis Blue), The Boyfriend - 100% Fine Poplin (Sky Blue, Blue Multi Stripe, and Royal Blue Stripe), The Classic - Oxford (Celeste Blue). All classic and safe.
But if you fancy a little wrist candy for your sartorial flair, the Kew Blouse - 100% Fine Poplin (Royal Blue Stripe, White) and The Boyfriend Contrast Exaggerated Cuff and Collar (Sky Blue Inverted Pinstripe) offer some bold and snappy options.
And for those crisp autumn mornings or just a low-key vibe, the 100% cotton The Oversized - Thick Brushed (Blue and Green Check) and 80% cotton/20% wool The Classic - Fine Brushed (Heritage Green Plaid).
WNU has expanded to include some other garments, and specifically this Navy cotton Devon Jumper - 100% Cotton is a fine example. And their shade of Navy is particularly good as not all shades are created equal. Navy, in my opinion, is the ultimate first color choice, never wrong and has always been my absolute favorite. It can be easily overlooked, but shouldn’t be as it flatters everyone, male or female, which probably explains its wide use in uniforms.
The WNU outerwear is also interesting — their 100% cotton Chatsworth Car Coat and the 100% Cotton Kent Jacket - Waxed Cotton (and both with a great Black Watch-ish lining). Also, their slim leg, 100% wool (woven in England) Regent Cigarette Trouser - 100% Wool. As always, I favor the Navy, though they also have Black. Next season I will be taking a much closer look at their linen option.
And in a nod to my erstwhile argyle wearing self, &Daughter has this one — Ava Argyle Crewneck in Navy with Smalt — that appeals to my bolder side, and while there, I saw this one — Ada Crewneck Cardigan in Flannel/Navy Stripe — which also stood out. (Their Made in Scotland knitwear is also worn by the same massively popular young royal.)
And onto one of my other favorite categories, bags, and Mulberry’s Bayswater, especially in Oak. — Bayswater, Oak NVT. Obviously this is one of their all time classics and with good reason. Good looking, timeless, and big. Another of my trifectas.
So onward. Unlike this hot weather, autumn gives more than it takes. In fact, in my opinion, it gives everything and takes nothing.
