Folk hero Mac McClung is heading overseas.
A few weeks ago, McClung’s mother, Lenoir McClung, announced that her son was heading over to Basquet Girona of Liga ACB.
McClung is out of two-way deals, and his mother is right, there’s no reason for him to go back to the G League.
Why?
Because McClung falls into a huge bucket of players who can have a cup of coffee in the NBA, but whose real careers are overseas, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
The professional basketball world has never been smaller. More now than ever, American players are willing to pick up and leave the States for an international career. The world isn’t as scary as it used to be.
McClung is responsible for where he’s headed. He’s not a defender. He’s not a lead guard. He’s an undersized, shoot-first player who doesn’t shoot well enough on an NBA level to ignore his shortcomings.
He’s a dime-a-dozen professional player, but if you’re a Georgetown fan, you have to wonder what Patrick Ewing’s coaching career at his alma mater would have been if he could have built around McClung and fellow freshman point guard James Akinjo.
