A few weeks ago, at some point over the course of this long and winding World Cup, I said the one thing going against France was that they were by far and away the best team in the competition.
Based on their performances, their free-flowing attack, and their World Cup pedigree under Didier Deschamps, it seemed certain Les Bleus would be the team to beat.
Spain, though, had other ideas.
Should we really be surprised? They are, after all, the reigning European champions. They have conceded just once at this World Cup. They have not lost a match since March 2024, which means they have equalled Italy’s 37-game unbeaten streak — the longest in history.
