Welcome to my Bear Blog. IMG_9375 My plan is to mostly use this as a Journal record of things my wife, the dogs and I do which for the foreseeable fu...
It’s been a stressful couple of weeks, final legal questions on the sale of old house, causing stress disrupting sleep. Whilst we frantically get the house ready to receive all the furniture and stuff from old house AND fit out the cabin so son can move straight it at short notice if needed. In the middle of all this we bought our first new bed (a super king) in 30 years. And put the guest bedroom…
Almost a month since the last update and progress had been a little more random. The sale of or old house is progressing and that’s spread our attention as we get ready to clear it out and focused our attention on getting the cabin habitable. So we’ve cleared some rubbish, finished painting the cabin (save the window frames) and built some steps. Modified the steps so we don’t lose the pathway to…
Somehow I stumbled on another Puutalo (company) building. It’s the sauna from the 1948 London Olympics which has fairly recently been Listed as a heritage building. It’s fascinating to see how little the main elements of the building changed between it and our being made in the mid 1970s. I’ve also found a picture of a Puutalo school and some other random Puutalo related stuff.
Will has been an absolute trouper. Single-handedly he has waxed the inside of the cabin. It is backbreaking work waxing ceilings and he did a large section of it in 30° C heat! D and I have got the first coat of Matt Black barn paint all over the cabin, so apparently according to the instructions we just have one more there to go and that should be good and water resistant. Obviously then we need…
D got the first coat on the chassis and one end wall yesterday. I was even allowed to do the top bit as there are no windows for me to cover in paint! And today we are starting the next really daunting task, waxing on and off inside the cabin. So far the heat is bearable but we are only at 27 degrees with 32 forecast later and the cabin has less tree shade in the afternoon. [Edit to add] It may…
Huge milestone. We have finished getting the acres of wood on the walls of the main house. Although we still have the front porch to do it’s not water tight yet so we may leave it until later. So that frees D up from months of wax on wax off to start decorating outside. She’s starting on the cabin and is painting the first coat of the chassis in matt black.
Well, we’ve almost finished the marathon task of waxing and nailing all the T&G on the walls of the house! I finished up the living area this morning with the tricky area behind the radiator. So this is what the workshop come living area looks like now. Just the one wall in the passageway to do now. and then the front porch will be done later when we’ve replaced the main house and canopy’s roof…
It’s been a busy and stressful month. Mostly with Will cracking on with getting as much T&G on the wall as he can. While I sit in the garden with the dogs and Donna waxes the wood. While we also prepared Lock House to sell, to get it on the market just as all the ASB on the lock kicks off over the hot bank holiday weekend. This happened just before we arrived at our annual “holiday” at Call Of The…
We seem to have settled back into a routine that is allowing us to make significant progress while now living in the house full time. Basically Will and I crack on three days a week while Donna takes the dogs out for the day, taking them for walks, running chores, looking after the other house (which she’s also preparing to put back on the market) shopping etc etc … I think she has the hardest job…
As we sort of expected the conservatory rear extension is all a bit of a bodge on a bodge type of thing. Thankfully it’s mostly built under the big main roof overhang so is mostly watertight, save the area over the back door directly under the bottom of the valley gutter, that’s leaking badly in heavy rain. Unfortunately fixing that will have to wait until we re-roof after we’ve sold other house.…
