The skeletons whirred to life seamlessly, and Kendall wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mandible. According to Anna, the skeletons had caused loads of trouble throughout the previous week – not turning on when they were supposed to, sensors jamming, the same skeleton popping out over and over even when no one was standing in front of the motion detector.
One of the new associates, Thomas, was fooled into believing a child was actually stuck in one of the coffins. Of course it turned out to be just a skeleton getting triggered to jump while the coffin door failed to open, banging aimlessly on the closed lid. They might be the “biggest, spookiest, and most lifelike” skeleton display money could buy, but they weren’t the most reliable by a long shot.
Kendall’s opinion of the skeletons didn’t improve when twenty minutes into her shift, a kid was already running up to complain about them.
“The skeleton took my candy!” Five accusatory words no one wanted to hear. Following the kid to the scene of the crime, Kendall mused on how this would end. Probably giving an irate parent a “free” bag of bat-shaped chips from Kendall’s wages or one of the massive-discount coupons saved for emergency circumstances.

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) starts tomorrow! I wrote 5,000 words in October to warm up and I’m super excited to celebrate the 25th year of NaNoWriMo by drafting 50,000 words for the third book of my trilogy. If you have a NaNoWriMo account, you’re invited to follow my progress at https://nanowrimo.org/participants/roserhiannon!
Reading 📚 In October I finished a bunch of books to clear the way for November. Typically my reading goes way down in November while all my free time is spent writing. If you’re looking for a good spooky season read, some of my all-time favorites are 3 Favorite Halloween Reads! Below are the books I finished this month:
I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast is Me by Jamison Shea - Will definitely be on my list of favorite books for the year. Such an incredible spooky season read too.
Godkiller by Hannah Kaner – Another “Favorite Books of 2023” contender.
Operating Instructions by Anne Lamott – Hilarious.
Cyberinsurance Policy by Josephine Wolff – Informative.
Coming up next:
Chilling Effect by Valerie Valdes – will be quickly followed by the sequel, I’m so glad this is part of a series.
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott – I’ve heard a ton about this book and looking forward to implementing the ideas as part of my writing practice.
Fantastic Numbers and Where to Find Them by Antonio Padilla– Yay great science nonfiction!
Watching 🎆 The Wheel of Time Season 2 was awesome. And I finally watched the Barbie movie, so if anyone still wants to talk about that, I’m down.
Listening 🎶 “Spooky cozy instrumental” playlist by Charlie sets the 💀🎃👻🦇 mood!
Wishing you a SPOOKTACULAR Halloween and a cozy start to November!
